Tony's Tips

Tony's latest Tips are listed below in a calendar format.  Your pond is constantly changing.  A minimum amount of maintenance is required to keep it and any plant life in top condition.  Look over this schedule monthly and make sure you keep these reminders on your "to do" list.  You might want to print this page and put it where you can check off each monthly event.

January

  1. Check the water level. ( ponds and pondless waterfalls)
  2. Make sure that there are air holes in any ice that may have formed to let gases escape.

 

February

  1. Check the water level.
  2. Order any filter pads, food, bacteria, or other supplies to be prepared for the Spring.
  3. Schedule your Spring clean-out from Aquatic Creations and fertilize your plants afterwards.
  4. Call us for any needs you may require.

 

March

Depending on the weather conditions, March and April are the  best months to clean your pond and prepare it for the year.  See April checklist. (Also pondless need to be cleaned at this time in the bog and filter areas.)

 

April

If you elect to do it yourself, the following things must be done:

*       Clean all filter pads

*       Add bacteria

*       Fertilize plants

*       Repot any large plants

*       Turn on the auto-fill for the pond

*       Begin feeding your fish with a Spring food


 

May

  1. Do a water change of 10-20%.
  2. De-chlorinate the added water accordingly.
  3. Summer fish food can be started according to the water temperature chart on the bag.

 

June

       Fertilize the water lilies and lotus plants.


 

July

  1. Do a second 10-20% water change.
  2. De-chlorinate the added water accordingly.

 

August

       Enjoy your pond.


 

September

  1. Do a third 10-20% water change.
  2. De-chlorinate the added water accordingly.

 

October

  1. Autumn fish food can be started according to the water temperature chart on the bag.
  2. Leaf nets should be put over the pond to keep out leaves.

 

November

  1. Last month for autumn fish food.
  2. Do not feed the fish when the water temperature is below 52 degrees.
  3. Make sure all auto-fills are turned off as freezing temps have arrived and water manually.

 

December

  1. Disconnect the auto-fill for the winter.
  2. If warmer days are continuing, you can feed the fish but only with a Wheat Germ Food.
  3. Fish are cold blooded and the protein food will not digest in their bodies in the colder temperatures.
